Our Story

Launched in early 2022, MDRNX is a small, family-owned business that got its start from our mutual love for design and our personal connection to the culture and heritage of Mexico. At its heart, MDRNX aims to connect American households with the rich, storied traditions and cultures of Mexico by providing unique pieces for the home, with a focus on form as well as function.

Several years ago, during a road trip through central Mexico, from Oaxaca to Puebla, San Miguel de Allende to San Luis Potosí, Javier and Jamey found many wonderful items along their travels and ended up shipping several boxes home to the northwestern United States. From textiles like area rugs and woven drink coasters, to a ceramic Talavera dish set and countless other objets d’art made of glass, wood, plaster or stone, we delighted in the vibrancy and texture of these hand-crafted pieces and the stories of how they came to be made. Our friends and family also loved the items we’d brought back, and often expressed interest in having something similar for their own homes. That’s when we had the idea to bridge the gap between our two countries, to give homeowners and designers in the U.S. real access to the more unique, hard-to-find wares and creations of traditional Mexican artisans.

Because it was important to us to build an ethical business model that eschewed mass-market production and unfair labor practices, we first invested time in establishing relationships with artisan groups, nonprofits, and business owners in Mexico. We focused on those who were committed to maintaining fair trade practices and who would partner with us to ensure that each artist is paid a fair wage. Together with our partner counterparts in Mexico, including non-profits, we aspire to help empower these artisans and craftspeople to build a more equitable and comfortable livelihood for themselves and their communities.

As for the products themselves, while there are already many artisanal offerings in the US, our collection specifically focuses on amplifying smaller, lesser-known artisans, a process we like to call ‘amplification through thoughtful curation.’ With a degree in interior design and a passion for collaborating with artisans, Andrea is championing our efforts to source items that can only be found deep in the heart of Mexico, well off the beaten path. Our design and quality standards are also very high—MDRNX only offers unique, beautiful pieces, each made by hand, that we think you’re going to love having as part of your home.

The road ahead is an exciting one for MDRNX: our collection will continue to grow as we seek out and cultivate relationships with additional groups and artisans in Mexico. We will also collaborate closely with select partners to develop new and innovative custom designs we believe will resonate with you, our customers, while continuing to honor, share, and learn from the heritage, traditions, techniques and practices of our artisans’ culture and history. And, as our business grows, we commit to ensuring our success will also benefit and enhance the lives of our partners.

Thank you for joining us, and welcome! We are so excited to share this journey with you.

Meet the Team

Andrea

I am a Mexican interior designer. I draw a strong connection from my rich cultural heritage and my passion is to develop collaborations between artisans and designers to create new and unique pieces that are innovative and that adapt well with modern homes.

I am a dog person who enjoys traveling and taking a dip in the ocean whenever I get the chance.

Jamey

With a background in traditional art and a twenty-five year career in graphic design, Jamey lends his eye (and much of his free time) to MDNRX by way of helping with the company identity and branding, as well as participating in our ongoing process of discovering new art and artisans with whom to partner.

Javier

I was born and raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico and in my early thirties I moved to the US to pursue a graduate degree in business. What excites me the most about MDRNX is to be able to share with the world a selection of beautiful artisanal objects that have a rich cultural heritage.

In my free time I enjoy gardening and playing board games with my husband and friends.
